    Species Description - Leaf blades inversely W-shaped without wings. Inflated epidermis at adaxial median costa in part accompanied by 1-rowed small thin-walled translucent cells (Fig. 4 t); component epidermal cells broadly longitudinally rectangular. Abaxial epidermal cells at lateral costas (Fig. 5) dissimilar to those of intercostal epidermis, markedly large, longitudinally rectangular to nearly cubic. The rest of epidermis consisting of uniformly small rectangular cells, directly connected to chlorenchyma without hypodermal layer. Mesophyll (Fig. 27) differentiated into palisade and spongy portions. Palisade tissue 1- or in part 2-layered. Spongy chlorenchyma with large irregularly shaped cavities between vascular bundles; the component assimilatory cells often conspicuously lobed but not typically stellate; a few tannin cells noticed in palisade chlorenchyma and abaxial mesophyll. Vascular bundles of varying sizes remotely spaced in a row close to the abaxial epidermis, each with a small abaxial girder and a poorly developed adaxial fiber strand; small group of translucent cells attached to outer bundle sheath.

  • Discussion

    Note. In the genus Becquerelia, B. cymosa has been anatomically examined (Koyama, 1965). The leaf structures of two more species of Becquerelia described in this paper is essentially similar to that of B. cymosa especially in the distribution of inflated epidermal cells and vascular sclerenchyma, and in the degree of differentiation in the mesophyll.
