Species Description - Scandent to subscandent shrubs, branches pendulous, widely spreading, lateral branchlets numerous, short, cinereous-lepidote. Leaves somewhat crowded toward the end of lateral branchlets; petioles 714mm long; blades (3.5-)4.5-9 x 1.5-3 cm, subcoriaceous, oblong, obtuse, rarely acute at apex, narrowly rounded to slightly oblique at base, margin often conspicuously dentate, glabrous above, cinereous scales with resinous dots in center below, 6-9 lateral veins on each side. Inflorescences axillary, dense corymbose clusters of (5-) 10-30 heads. Heads with three florets, solitary or in groups of two or three at end of branching peduncles; involucres ovoid to cylindrical, 7-8 x 2-3 mm; phyllaries irregularly imbricate in 5-7 series, yellowish brown but red or brownish purple at shallowly trifid apex, tomentulose-glandular below subobtuse tip, margin sparsely arachnoid to ciliate, outer phyllaries oval to elliptic, inner ones narrowly elliptic, curved or bow-shaped. Corollas sparsely pilose, white gland-dotted, the tube (5.5-)6-7(-7.5) mm long, the lobes 2.5-3(-3.5) mm long, outer surface densely glandular at tip; anthers (3.5-)4-4.5 mm long, basal auricles elongated, papillate at tip, 0.4-1 mm long. Pappus white, biseriate, inner bristles filiform, (8-)9-9.5 mm long, outer bristles linear or filiform, unequal 0.5-2.5 mm long. Achenes large, ca. 5 mm long, 10-costate, gland-dotted.

  • Discussion

Piptocarpha ramboi is morphologically similar to P. sellowii, with which it is largely sympatric in distribution. It is distinguished from P. sellowii by its smaller leaves and habit, and its distinctly longer inner pappus, robust achenes, and larger florets. The name, Piptocarpha notata (Less.) Baker, has been misapplied to nearly all of the herbarium specimens that we have identified as P. ramboi. This misapplied name was established in the literature by Cabrera and Vittet (1961) in their floristic treatment of the Vernonieae of Santa Catarina by their reference to specimens that were not P. notata, but were actually an undescribed species (P. ramboi).
