Species Description - Small gnarled trees 2-5 m tall with extensive upper branching, branches brittle with bark rough and fissured; branchlets terete, finely striate, closely cinereous-tomentose-lepidote. Leaves not crowded along the branchlets; petioles stout (5-)10-30(-40) mm long; blades 5-13 x 3-8.5 cm, coriaceous, orbicular, elliptic, or tending to oblong or obovate, obtuse or emarginate at apex, oblique, slightly cordate or rounded at base, margin entire, slightly wavy, glabrous, rugose above, silvery stellate-tomentose below, 6-8 pairs of lateral veins. Inflorescences axillary, subglobose to globose clusters of 3-12 heads. Heads typically with (3-)4-5 florets, sessile to subsessile; involucres ovoid to cylindrical, neck constricted, tomentose at base, 7-10.5 x 3-4(-5) mm; phyllaries tightly imbricate in 6-9 series, glabrate, subpersistent at maturity, yellowish brown (when dried), margin ciliate or arachnoid, tomentulose and darkened at apex, outer ones triangular to elliptic, obtuse at apex, lowest series tomentose, inner ones elliptic to linear-lanceolate, subacute at apex. Corollas cream-colored, sparsely pilose, gland-dotted especially on outer surface of lobes, tube typically 3.5-4 mm long, lobes 34 mm long; anthers (3.5-)4-5 mm long, the basal auricles sharply caudate, 1-1.5 mm long. Pappus straw-colored, biseriate, inner bristles filiform, (5.5-)6-7(-7.5) mm long, outer bristles linear or filiform, unequal, often deciduous, 0.5-2 mm long. Achenes 3-4(-5) mm long, robust, occasionally 3-angled, costate.
