Latin Diagnosis - A T. eximia Kramer foliolis abrupte acuminatis, petalis tomentulosis et fructibus ovoideis vel globosis differt.

Species Description - Tree 5-25 m tall. Stems terete, glabrous, lenticellate. Leaves paripinnate, 1.5-3 m long; distal process acicular, ca. 1 cm long; leaflets 6-12, opposite or alternate, oblanceolate or less often elliptic, 40-55 × 6.5-20.5 cm, sub-coriaceous, glabrous, flattened to slightly bullate, dull on both surfaces, the venation brochidodromus, not forming a sub-marginal loop, the adaxial surface with a prominent midvein and slightly raised secondaries, the abaxial surface with strongly prominent midvein, secondary and tertiary veins prominulous, tertiary veins reticulate, the margins undulate, the apex abruptly acuminate, the base slightly asymmetrical, obtuse; petiolules woody, enlarged, 0.6-1.6 × 0.5-0.9 cm, glabrous, adaxially canaliculate; rachis terete, striate, glabrous; petioles at least 21 cm long, nearly terete, striate, glabrous, bulbous at base. Thyrses panicle-like, terminal; cataphylls minute, scale-like; dichasia simple or compound; pedicels ca. 2.5 mm long, articulate at the middle. Calyx 2.5-3 mm long, puberulent, the sepals 1-1.7 mm long, ovate, concave, obtuse at apex; petals elliptic, 5.5-6 mm long, white, adaxially glabrous, abaxially tomentulose at base, ciliate at margins, the apex rounded-obtuse, the base cuneate; appendages oblong-lanceolate, as long as the petal, villose sericeous-tomentose on both surfaces, adaxially glabrous at base; disc cup-shaped, 5-lobed, puberulent, ca. 1 mm tall; stamens 8 (9), the filaments of unequal length, 3-3.5 mm long, slightly flattened, woolly-pubescent, the anthers 1-1.5 mm long, elliptic, glabrous, apiculate at apex. Pistillate flower unknown. Fruits brown, ovoid to globose, 3-3.2 cm long, glabrous, rugulate, the pericarp woody, ca. 4 mm thick, the endocarp glabrous, smooth. Seeds solitary, nearly globose, the testa apparently not fleshy. Embryo sub-globose, the cotyledons laying obliquely transverse over each other, of similar size.

  • Discussion

Talisia equatoriensis is morphologically similar to I eximia, however, the former differs from the latter by: abruptly acuminate leaflets (vs. obtuse to acuminate); abaxially tomentulose petals (vs. glabrous); and the ovoid or globose fruits (vs. ellipsoid). The specific epithet refers to the country where the type was collected.

  • Distribution
