Species Description - Tree, to 30 m tall, or shrub. Leafy twigs 1-3.5 mm thick, sparsely to densely puberulous. Lamina oblong to elliptic (or to lanceolate), (2.5-)5-15(-32) × (1.5-) 2.5-7(-13) cm, mostly broadest above the middle, almost equilateral, subcoriaceous; apex acuminate; base acute to obtuse to rounded; margin obscurely to distinctly dent(icul)ate to subentire; upper surface on the midrib sparsely to rather densely and minutely puberulous, glabrescent; lower surface on the main veins very sparsely to rather densely puberulous with mostly appressed hairs of different lengths; venation almost plane or the midrib slightly impressed above, sometimes also the lateral veins slightly impressed, prominent beneath; lateral veins 914 pairs; tertiary venation mostly partly scalariform; petiole 0.5-1.5(-3.5) cm long, 1.5-2 mm thick, sparsely and minutely puberulous to glabrous; stipules 0.3-0.8 cm long, puberulous to glabrous, caducous. Staminate inflorescences patent to pendulous, (0.5-)2-6(-l 0) cm long, including the 0.1-0.4 cm long, puberulous peduncle; flowers rather crowded to distant, (rather) broadly sessile; perianth ca. 2 mm long, 4-parted, ciliolate; stamens 4, isomorphic or anisomorphic, straight (with the anthers ± transverse) or bent outwards at anthesis; filaments 0.5-1.2 mm long; anthers 0.5-0.7 × 0.6-0.8 mm, the connective broad. Pistillate inflorescences patent to pendulous, 1-3 cm long, to 9 cm long in fruit; peduncle 0.1-0.5(-2) cm long, to 0.8 cm long in fruit, puberulous; rachis minutely puberulous to glabrous, carnose (?) and red (?) in fruit; flowers (5-)15-40, sessile to shortly pedicellate; pedicel 0.1-0.3(-0.5) cm long, or occasionally to 2 cm long in fruit, to 3 mm thick, sparsely puberulous; perianth 2-2.5 mm long, 4-lobed, the upper part broadly ovoid, glabrous, the lower part short, densely, minutely puberulous to glabrous; stigmas tongueshaped, 0.4-0.6 mm long, finely papillate. Fruiting perianth subglobose (to broadly ovoid or obovoid), 0.5-0.8 × 0.5-0.8 cm, turning from red to black, subapiculate, the surface smooth, subglabrous, sometimes densely puberulous or with rather dense, globose-capitate, pluricellular hairs.

  • Discussion

Material of Sorocea steinbachii has been treated under S. hirtella by Burger et al. (1962) due to a misidentification of the type collection of S. Hirtella, which is presently reduced to a subspecies of S. pubivena.

Sorocea steinbachii shows morphological affinities to both S. muriculata and S. pubivena. In the lamina characters, S. steinbachii differs from S. muriculata in the minutely puberulous midrib above. It differs from S. pubivena subsp. oligotricha in the indumentum of the lower leaf surface, especially on the midrib. In S. steinbachii, this indumentum consists of minute patent hairs and distinctly longer, mostly ± appressed, sometimes ± patent hairs. In S. pubivena, these hairs are almost equally long, either patent or appressed. Moreover, the number of lateral veins is mostly more than 12 pairs in S. pubivena, but usually up to 12 pairs in S. steinbachii. The pistillate inflorescence of S. steinbachii mostly has more flowers than those of the two other species. The fruits are smaller than those of S. pubivena. The stamens are bent outwards in S. steinbachii, but inwards in S. muriculata. Sorocea steinbachii cannot be distinguished from S. pubivena in characters of the staminate flowers.

Specimens from the southern part of the species area often have oblong to lanceolate leaves, broadest above the middle and mostly distinctly dentate. In the northern part of the species area, the leaves are usually oblong to elliptic, broadest at the middle and subentire. Some specimens (e.g., Pruski et al. 3462) have exceptionally long pedicels, to 2 cm long in the fruiting state, similar to those of Sorocea trophoides.

Sorocea steinbachii has been cultivated in the botanical garden of Museu Goeldi in Belem (Para, Brazil) from material collected along Río Ucayali (Peru) by Kuhlmann. From these staminate specimens in cultivation, several herbarium collections have been made: Ducke 929 (F, K, IAN, MG, MO, NY, US), Ducke MG 17044 (A, BM, F, G, US), Huber MG 6977 (BM, G, MG).
