    Description - Plant flowering 1.5-2.5 m high. Leaves many in a funnelform rosette, 5-8 dm long, minutely and obscurely lepidote, the outer recurving, the inner erect; sheaths subquadrate, slightly wider than the blades, dark castaneous beneath; blades ligulate, broadly acute or rounded and apiculate, 7-10 cm wide, beautifully marked with large irregular dark green or purple transverse bands. Scape erect, stout; scape-bracts densely imbricate, subfoliaceous, recurved toward apex. Inflorescence amply 2-3-pinnate, many-flowered, to 8 dm long, lax, glabrous; primary bracts broadly ovate, acute, slightly shorter or longer than the sterile bases of the branches; branches divergent, densely racemose, to 25 cm long, the sterile base with 1-2 bracts. Floral bracts erect, not secund, broadly ovate, about 3 times as long as the internodes, much exceeded by the sepals, inflated, obtusely carinate, slightly incurved, coriaceous, greenish yellow; flowers spreading, downwardly secund; pedicels stout, 1 cm long. Sepals narrowly elliptic, subacute, 25-30 mm long, ecarinate; petals oblanceolate, obtuse, exceeding the stamens, yellowish, bearing 2 oblong acute scales at base; stamens included.
