    Description - Plant flowering 5-14 dm high. Leaves many, arched-spreading, 4-6(-9) dm long, minutely lepidote on both sides; sheaths broadly elliptic, relatively short, usually almost wholly dark-castaneous; blades ligulate, broadly acute or rounded, apiculate, 35-65 mm wide, with irregular cross-lines by transmitted light. Scape erect, 7-10 dm long, glabrous; scape-bracts erect, imbricate, the lower foliaceous, the upper broadly elliptic, apiculate, green or red. Inflorescence simple, usually many-flowered, lax, linear, 15-40 cm long, glabrous; rhachis straight or flexuous, usually rather stout, sulcate. Floral bracts broadly ovate with decurrent auricles, 25-35 (-45) mm long, usually about equaling the middle of the sepals, ecarinate, inflated, coriaceous, faintly nerved or even, red or dark green, rarely with dark margins; flowers reflexed at anthesis; pedicels stout, 7-15 mm long. Sepals narrowly elliptic, 25-30 mm long, ecarinate, yellowish; petals 30-45 mm long, broadly oblong, obtuse, greenish, bearing 2 obovate scales at base; stamens included; filaments much enlarged toward apex. Capsule stout, acute, 3-5 cm long.
