Alar cells inflated, large, lax, protruding into the costa. Basal laminal cells thin-walled, weakly pitted, in 8-10 rows elongate, 47-72 × 7.5-13 µm. Upper laminal cells elongate, 47-90 × 5.5-7 µm. Seta golden yellow to brownish, to 16 mm high, erect, twisted dextrorsely in the upper part (as seen from above). Capsule yellowish to brownish, 2.5 mm long without operculum, cylindrical, smooth. • Discussion

Distribution and Ecology: Acidophilous on earth-covered rocks, in fissures of rocks, on humic or peaty soil in subalpine to alpine regions, most frequently above the tree line in Europe, Asia, North and Central America (from Alaska through the Rocky Mountains to Mexico), also in Greenland. This species has been reported also from Brazil (Yano, 1981, as P. albicans (Schwaegr.) Loeske) and Peru (Hegewald & Hegewald, 1975). These records are referred, however, to literature references of Leucobryum megalophyllum and thus it seems these records concern the type of Dicranum albicans Schwaegr., which consists of a species of Leucobryum.
