    Species Description - Tree; young shoots subglabrous, pale greyish-brown, becoming cracked, few lenticels. Leaves clustered, spirally arranged or verticillate, 9-19 × 4.2-8 cm, broadly oblanceolate, apex shortly narrowly attenuate to obtuse or rounded, base acute, chartaceous to thinly coriaceous, glabrous; venation eucamptodromous, midrib sunken on the upper surface, secondary veins 15-16 pairs, slightly convergent or parallel, arcuate, slightly impressed on the upper surface; intersecondaries absent; tertiaries very fine, horizontal; quaternaries finely areolate. Petiole 1.2-2 cm long, channelled in the upper half, glabrous, stipels present, paired, ca. 1 mm long, linear, fixed 0.5-1 cm above base of petiole. Fascicles many-flowered, on twigs and larger branches. Pedicel 2-3 mm long, finely appressed puberulous. Sepals (four)five, 2.5-3 mm long, ovate, apex obtuse, finely appressed puberulous ouside, glabrous inside. Corolla 4-5 mm long, tube 1.5-2 mm long, lobes 5-6, 2.5-3 mm long, ovate-lanceolate, apex obtuse, sparsely sericeous outside, glabrous inside. Stamens 5-6, fixed at the base of the corolla lobes; filaments ca. 2.5 mm long, glabrous; anthers ca. 1.3 mm long, lanceolate, glabrous. Ovary conical, tapering gradually into style, five-locular, appressed puberulous; style ca. 1.5 mm long after anthesis, appressed puberulous in lower half; style-head simple. Fruit 4-5 cm long, broadly oblong-ellipsoid, asymmetric, apex and base acute; smooth, sparsely and finely appressed puberulous. Seed solitary. Field characters. Tree to 40 m high and 1 m diam. with cylindrical bole and white latex; the bark is bitter and astringent. Flowers dark violet. Flowering Nov-Feb, fruit Mar-Jun.
