Species Description - Tree; young shoots long- and stiffly-pubescent, soon glabrous, pale greyish-white, rough and cracked, lenticellate. Leaves clustered, subverticillate, 9-15 × 4-6.1 cm, broadly oblanceolate, apex rounded to shortly narrowly attenuate, base acute or narrowly cuneate, thinly coriaceous, glabrous; venation eucamptodromous, marginal vein present, midrib sunken on the upper surface, secondary veins 15-18 pairs, parallel, slightly arcuate, slightly impressed on the upper surface; intersecondaries absent; tertiaries very fine, oblique. Petiole 1.5-3 cm long, not or only slightly channelled at the apex, glabrous, stipels absent. Fascicles many-flowered, densely clustered in the leaf axils and below the leaves. Pedicel 4-6 mm long, shortly pubescent. Sepals five, 2.5-3 mm long, broadly ovate, apex rounded, appressed pubescent outside, glabrous inside, long ciliate. Corolla ca. 6 mm long, tube ca. 2 mm long, lobes five(six), ca. 4 mm long, oblong or elliptic, apex rounded, sparsely sericeous outside, margin glabrous, glabrous inside. Stamens five(six), fixed at the base of the corolla lobes, exserted; filaments ca. 3 mm long, glabrous; anthers ca. 1.5 mm long, lanceolate, glabrous. Ovary narrowly ovoid, five-locular, densely strigose; style ca. 0.5 mm long after anthesis, glabrous; style-head simple. Fruit (desc. ex Ducke) 2.5-4 cm long, subfalcate-oblong, apex acuminate or apiculate, one side straight, the other strongly arcuate-convex, smooth, subglabrous. Seed with an oblong scar, not reaching the base. Field characters. Tree to 20 m high with cylindrical bole and yellowish-grey, smooth sweet-tasting bark. Flowers greenish.
