Species Description - Tree; young shoots golden sericeous-tomentose to merely appressed puberulous, soon glabrous, pale grey-brown, smooth, lenticellate. Leaves 6-13.5 × 2.1-5 cm, elliptic, oblong-elliptic or lanceolate, apex narrowly attenuate, base obtuse, acute or narrowly attenuate, upper surface glabrous, lower surface pale sericeous at first, soon glabrous; venation eucamptodromous-brochidodromous, midrib slightly sunken on the upper surface, secondary veins 11-16 pairs, parallel or slightly convergent, straight or slightly arcuate, intersecondaries usually long; tertiaries few, forming an open reticulum. Petiole 3-9 mm long, slightly channelled, sericeous to glabrous. Fascicles 2-6-flowered. Pedicel 1.5-5 mm long, sericeo-tomentose. Flowers unisexual (dioecious) and bisexual (? functionally male). Sepals (four-)five, 1.5-2 mm long, ovate to suborbicular, apex acute to obtuse, outside sericeous to appressed puberulous, sometimes with a broad glabrous margin and ciliate, inside glabrous. Corolla 2.5-3.5 mm long, tube equalling or slightly longer than the the lobes, lobes (four-)five, ovate, apex obtuse or rounded, glabrous or with a few appressed hairs near the base of the tube outside. Stamens (four-)five, fixed near the base of the corolla tube; filaments 0.5-1 mm long, subglabrous; anthers 1.25-1.5 mm long, broadly ovate, long-hairy; stamens absent in female flowers. Ovary narrowly ovoid, 2-5-locular, pubescent; style 0.5-1 mm long after anthesis, glabrous; style-head slightly expanded or minutely lobed. Fruit 2.2-2.5 cm long, ellipsoid or obovoid, apex rounded, base rounded or slightly tapered, smooth, glabrous; pericarp fleshy. Seed solitary, 1.3-1.4 cm long, obovoid, plano-convex, testa smooth, shiny, very hard and woody, 1-2 mm thick; scar broad, covering the adaxial face, 1.1-1.4 × 0.8-0.9 cm; embryo with thick flat cotyledons and exserted radicle, surrounded by endosperm about as thick as the cotyledons. Field characters. Tree to 25 m high and 75 cm diam., bark containing white milky latex. Flowers pale green, and fruit maturing yellowish. Flowering in Venezuela and Guyana Jul to Sep, in Brazil Jul to Jan, fruiting Venezuela Jan to Feb, in Brazil Feb, May to Aug. The fruit is eaten by birds (Steyermark 60975).

Distribution
A widely distributed but apparently rare species, extending from N Venezuela (Anzoategui) and Guyana, throughout Amazonian Brazil to Bolivia, generally in mixed lowland forest on non-flooded land, but ascending to 1200 m altitude in Venezuela.
