    Species Description - Young shoots rather coarsely pubescent with reddish-brown hairs, becoming glabrous, pale grey or buff, roughened, lenticellate or not. Leaves spaced, alternate and distichous, 4.4-13.2 × 2.3-5 cm, elliptic, oblong-elliptic or oblanceolate, apex narrowly attenuate, base narrowly cuneate or attenuate, upper surface scattered pubescent to glabrous, lower surface pubescent with brown hairs or glabrous; venation brochidodromous, midrib sunken on the upper surface, secondary veins 12-18 pairs looping below the margin to form a prominent submarginal vein, parallel, straight or sometimes slightly arcuate; intersecondaries long; tertiaries parallel to the secondaries and descending from the margin. Petiole 3-9 mm long, not or only slightly channelled, pubescent. Fascicles 2-4-flowered. Pedicel 0.5-1.8 cm long, pubescent with reddish-brown hairs. Flowers bisexual. Sepals five, 3-4 mm long, lanceolate to narrowly ovate, apex acute to rounded, reddish-brown sericeous-pubescent. Corolla 4.5-6.5 mm long, tube 3.5-5 mm long, slightly thickened at the throat, lobes five, 1-1.5 mm long, ovate or triangular, apex obtuse to rounded, sparsely sericeous outside, glabrous inside. Stamens five, fixed at the top of the corolla tube; filaments 0.5-0.75 mm long, glabrous; anthers 0.4-0.75 mm long, lanceolate, glabrous. Ovary ovoid to pyramidal, five-locular, appressed puberulous; style ca. 0.5 mm long after anthesis, appressed puberulous in the lower half; style-head simple or minutely lobed. Fruit ca. 2 × 0.8 cm, narrowly ellipsoid, apex acute, base tapered, smooth, glabrous; pericarp fleshy. Seed solitary, ca. 1.5 × 0.7 cm, narrowly ellipsoid, apex acute, base tapered, not laterally compressed, testa smooth, shiny, with some inconspicuous sculpturing on the adaxial surface; scar basi-ventral, ca. 1 × 0.6 cm, cordate; embryo not seen. Field characters. Tree to 20 m high and 30 cm diam. with brown, narrowly fissured bark. Flowers pale green or cream-coloured, mature fruit greenish-red, exuding latex from cut surface. Flowering Jan to Apr, only fruiting collection Jan (Costa Rica, Alajuela).
