Species Description - Shrub or weak-stemmed tree; young shoots shortly pubescent with golden-brown ferruginous hairs, soon glabrous, pale greyish-brown, rough and scaling, usually without lenticels. Leaves spaced, usually spirally arranged, or rarely alternate and distichous, 3.5-9.5 × 1-4.2 cm, oblong, oblong-lanceolate, elliptic or oblanceolate, apex obtuse, acute, narrowly attenuate or obtusely cuspidate, coriaceous, glabrous or with sparse residual pubescence on the undersurface midrib, venation craspedodromous or brochidodromous, marginal vein strong, submarginal vein present, very close to or fusing with the marginal vein, midrib sunken on the upper surface, venation finely striate with the intersecondaries and tertiaries indistinguishable from the secondaries. Petiole 0.3-1.0 cm long, channelled, shortly pubescent to glabrous. Fascicles 2-6-flowered, axillary or in the axils of fallen leaves. Pedicel 2-4 mm long, shortly pubescent. Flowers unisexual (plant monoecious (?)). Sepals (four-) five, 1.75-2.5 mm long, ovate, obtuse to rounded, appressed puberulous to shortly pubescent outside, scattered appressed hairs inside or glabrous. Corolla 2-4.5 mm long, tube 1.25-3.25 mm long, lobes (four-)five, 0.75-1.5 mm long, ovate or triangular, apex obtuse to rounded, glabrous. Stamens (four-)five, included; filaments 0.5-0.75 mm long, glabrous; anthers 0.5-0.7 mm long, ovate or lanceolate, glabrous; stamens reduced to minute vestiges in female flowers. Staminodes (four-)five, 0.5-1 mm long, lanceolate to subulate, glabrous. Small annular hairy disk often present below the ovary in male flowers. Ovary ovoid, (four-)five-locular, densely stiff-hairy; style 0.75-1.5 mm long after anthesis, included, glabrous; style-head simple or minutely lobed. Fruit ca. 1 × 0.7 cm, broadly ellipsoid, apex and base rounded, smooth, glabrous. Seed solitary, ca. 0.9 cm long, laterally compressed, with a smooth, shining testa, ca. 0.25 mm thick; scar adaxial, ca. 1.5 mm wide. Field characters. Shrub or weak-stemmed tree to 15 m high and 40 cm diam.; larger specimens with fissured bark. Exudate present, white or yellowish. Flower slightly scented, pale yellowish-cream to light green, fruit maturing reddish.

Colombia, N. Venezuela, Brazil, mainly in drier areas with strongly seasonal climate, cerrado, gallery forest, rocky places, occasionally in high forest. Altitudinal range sea level to 1200 m.
