Species Description - Tree; young shoots sparsely and finely appressed puberulous, soon glabrous, becoming greyish or pale buff, cracked and slightly scaly, often lenticellate. Leaves spaced, nearly always alternate and distichous, rarely partly spirally arranged, (6.5-)9-20 × (2-)3-9 cm, elliptic or oblong-elliptic, apex narrowly or obtusely acuminate or attenuate, base narrowly attenuate or cuneate, thinly coriaceous, glabrous, venation craspedodromous or brochidodromous, with a strong marginal vein, submarginal vein very close to the marginal vein and sometimes fusing with it, midrib flat or slightly raised on the upper surface, leaf finely striate with shallowly ascending secondaries, intersecondaries and tertiaries indistinguishable from each other. Petiole 0.3-1.5 cm long, channelled, glabrous. Fascicles axillary, 3-15-flowered. Pedicel 3-9 mm long, usually reflexed or slightly coiled in bud, sparsely appressed, puberulous. Flowers unisexual (plant monoecious). Sepals five(-six), 2-3 mm long, ovate, apex obtuse or rounded, appressed puberulous outside, the inner ones with a broad glabrous margin, appressed puberulous or glabrous inside, often ciliate. Corolla (male) 4.5-6 mm long, tube 2.5-4 mm long, lobes five, 1.5-2 mm long; (female) ca. 3 mm long, tube 1.75-2 mm long, lobes 1-1.25 mm long; lobes ovate or lanceolate, apex obtuse or rounded; corolla frequently with sparse appressed hairs on the outside of the tube or glabrous. Stamens five, included; filaments 0.2-1 mm long, glabrous; anthers 0.6-1 mm long, lanceolate, glabrous; stamens in female flowers reduced to small vestiges, anthers, if present, very small and indehiscent. Staminodes five, 1-1.25 mm long, subulate or lanceolate, glabrous. Disk absent. Ovary narrowly ovoid, five-locular, scattered pubescent around the base; style 0.6-1.25 mm long after anthesis, included, glabrous; style-head minutely five-lobed. Fruit 2.5-3 cm long, narrowly obovoid or ellipsoid, apex acute to rounded, base tapering, smooth, glabrous. Seed solitary, 2-2.7 cm long, laterally compressed, apex usually rounded, base usually tapered, testa rough, sometimes transversely wrinkled, pale brown, matt, not shining, 0.3-1.5 mm thick; scar adaxial, 2-3 mm wide. Field characters. Tree to 40 m high and 60 cm diam., usually with a cylindrical bole, but often flowering as a small treelet less than 10 m high. Larger specimens may be buttressed, and have smooth to shallowly fissured, grey to reddish-brown bark. Slash pink to orange, with sticky white latex. Rowers yellowish-green or white, fruit maturing reddish, purple or black. Flowering mostly Jul to Dec, though there are sporadic records outside this period, fruiting Oct to May.
