Species Description - Glabrous, Subscandent shrub, 1-5 m, or tree to 8 m tall; trunk to 30 cm diam. Branchlets slender, striate, early covered with grayish cork. Leaves lanceolate to lanceolate-oblong, sometimes more broadly or ovately so in the same specimen, apex acuminate, tip acute or bluntish, base attenuate and somewhat decurrent to the petiole, chartaceous to subcoriaceous, sometimes rather stiffly so, olivaceous-green, a little shining mainly above and brittle in dry specimens, subdensely tuberculate on both surfaces, edge hardly revolute, 6-8(-10) x (1 -) 1.5-2(-2.5,-4) cm, midrib flat or slightly impressed above, raised beneath, lateral nerves 6(-8) pairs rather straight from the midrib, curved-ascending before the edge, a little raised or hardly conspicuous on both surfaces, as is the reticulation of veins and veinlets; petiole 2(-3) x ca. 1 mm. Inflorescence(s) glabrous, solitary or mostly 2-3 from foliate axils, bearing each 2-3 (-6) flowers in the uppermost part of a slender peduncle 6-10 mm long. Flowers on pedicels 1-2 mm long, though the uppermost ones may be subsessile. Bracts and bracteoles of the epicalyx more or less adnate, ciliolate. Flower axis ca. 1.5 mm. Corolla tubular-urceolate in the brachystylous, generally more narrowly so in the dolichostylous form, pale yellow, salmon or light red, the inner throat dull yellow, faintly fragrant, (6-)7-8 mm long, 2.5-3 mm diam., 4- or 5-lobed in the upper ¼-1/3, lobes recurved. Disk and top of ovary glabrous; style 2-2.5 mm long in the brachystylous form, attaining the throat of the corolla in the dolichostylous one.

Mexico (Chiapas, Jalisco), Guatemala, El Salvador, Costa Rica (Alajuela, San José), and Panama (Chiriquí); in montane rain or cloud forest, mixed pine or oak forest, or damp thickets on mountain slopes, locally common, (850-)1500-2500(-2700) m alt.
