    Description - Shrubs or small to medium-sized trees. Leaves alternate, entire or toothed, penninerved, impunctate or coarsely pellucid-punctate and -lineate; petiole often thickened distally; stipules subulate, caducous. Flowers odoriferous, unisexual, dioecious. [male] flowers axillary, generally few together in a fascicle, rarely solitary. [female] flowers axillary and solitary. Sepals (2-)3, imbricate, subpersistent. Petals 6-8(-10), imbricate, larger than the sepals. [male] flowers: stamens 20-50; filaments inserted on a scarcely thickened torus, free or almost so, hairy; anthers linear, basifixed, longitudinally dehiscent. Rudiment of ovary 0. [female] flowers: stamens or staminodia 0. Ovary echinulate, with 3 multi-ovulate placentas; styles (2-)3-4 (rarely 5), short, rather persistent, distally 2-lobed, the lobes multi-laciniate as in Carpotroche. Fruit baccate, dry, globular, covered with bristles, indehiscent, or dehiscent distally only; pericarp usually thin-coriaceous, rarely thickish. Seeds rather numerous, irregularly polyhedric; testa fleshy, red to orange; endosperm copious; embryo straight; cotyledons cordate.

  • Distribution

    The genus is found from Honduras to Panama, in Colombia, Venezuela, the Guianas, in Brazil, southwards to E Peru and E Bolivia; mainly in lowland or submontane, rarely in montane forest up to 2000 m altitude.
