Carl Ernst Otto Kuntze was a german botanist who made expeditions to every corner of the globe throughout his 40 year career, amassing over 30,000 herbarium specimens from every continent. Among those are close to 3,000 type specimens, documenting plants new to science.
In 1908 after Kuntze's death, the New York Botanical Garden was able to purchase his collections with the financial assistance of Andrew Carnegie, the Vice President of NYBG's Board at the time.
