    Distribution (from PLANTAE): This family is pantropical in distribution, but very clearly centered in Central America, although the genus Tapeinocheilos has its center in Eastern Malaysia. They are most frequent in rain forests and other moist shady situations and are terrestrial. The genus Costus is the wholly dominating one with up to 175 species.
