the town of Ciudad Melchior towards
Santa Elena about 8km from Ciudad
Melchior on low lying ground near the
Belize border.
Medium-sized tree to l4m ht.; dbh 35cm.
with heavy branching and an open crown.
Bark smooth mid grey-brown mottled light
grey with lichen.
Foliage mid green slightly glossy above.
Abundant flowers in showy terminal
spikes, striking from a distance; calyx
dark brown, standard petal purple with a
yellow-green basal blotch in centre,
wing and keel petals purple fading
whitish at base, staminal tube white,
developing ovary pale green.
Abundant, scattered in pastures along
river banks with Guazuma ulmifolia.
