S-facing dry slope; mixed canopy of oak, big-toothed
maple & juniper; little understory beneath oak groves.
Fairly large trees, to approx. 5 m tall, with trunks to 3-4 dm
in diameter; rhizomatous, forming colonies of up to 40
individuals; signs of extensive late frost damage on many
tree limbs on outer edges of groves
