ACADEMIA NACIONAL DE CIENCIAS EXACTAS. FISICAS Y NATURALES DE BUENOS AIRES INSTITUTO TRUMAN e. YUNCKER HERBARIUM fJfiW YO^, botahiicau INSTITUTO DE BOTANICA DARWINION SAN ISIDRO. F. C. C. A. ARGENTINA San Isidro,30 de junio de 1951, 3>o Prof. Dr ? G. Yuncker DePauw bniversity,Indiana,u Deal' Dir; letter borne tii ie ago Dr. .^.L.Cabrera of La Plata passed to ne your of July 26, 1S4S . In that letter you expressed your opinion about a Peaeromia frail Buenos Aires (herbarium Krapovickas no. 3028) ", telling us that it would be perhaps a new species. I an now preparing a paper on this interesting southernmost Peperomia with detailed illustrations.! collected, the plant with Krapovickas and »1 cultivating it in this institute. I include herewith a duplicate speci- men with ripe drupes for your herbarium. In My opinion this_ plant is very probably conspecific with Peperomia cornarapana C.DG. 5from tlie eastern mountains of Bolivia* In the ori- ginal description De Candolle says (Mededeelinden Hijks herb. Leiden 27;8. 1315) that the plant is 'dense-velutino-puberula* but the fototyp.e (Chicago IIus IT.List, series no. 25.193) shows a plant very like that from Buenos Aires and not too much hairy.Unfortunately it is in flower only, but this is the case in many C.DC.species,whose descriptions in later years were very short.I have no type material. How the similarity is,on the other hand , very clear and although seems a difficulty, fortunately I have some spe- Bs.Aires, Cordoba,Chaco argentine* much the distance between the type locality of P.comarapana and the plant in northern Buenos Aires province. It, seems to me that P.L3tuckertii C.DC^from Cordoba,is also a synonym of P>comara- ^ My first little work on Peperomia was a note in our jornal Darwinian a ( vol. 7, p. 171-73.1945) ; I identified then F.catharinae liiq. for the first time for Argentina (E.Iiios, along the uruguay and Parana-Delta) ;this had been mis identified by L.Hauman as P.Lorentzii C.DC. from Tucum&n. ITow this P*catharinae is an epiphyte ,w&ereas P.comarapana is a true terrestrial rizo- matous species9with many differences. I ask you kindly to give new attention to my specimen of presumably P.comarapana and inform me about your opinion.Have you good material from type locality of P*comarapana ? Then I should appreciate very much the borrowing of a little sheet,if possible in fruiting state. It may be of interest for you to know that the Darwinion has the geographical distribution cimens which link the areas;north of prov. The Chaco specimens especially reduce very a good collection of many specimens are a iperaceae of Ecuador from the Godiro herbarium,I think types or iso types* Many are unnumbered, but nearly all have determinations by Godiro’s own hand. They might be of interest to you,as monographer of the tropical southamerican Piperaceae. Your monographs I- think are very important,! have seen them but we could not buy them as yet for the Darwinion. v Please , if possible, give me your answer as soon as you can. My paper on the Buenos Aires Peperomia comarapana( short time# I shall send you a separate copy. Do you continue also your work on Please accept my best regards. ) will be published in a Cuscuta ?
