756. Scytonema (Pefalonema) junipericola Farlow.
“Fairyland”, Bermuda, Jan., 1900.
W. G. FARLOW.
Forming indefinite, pulvinate, tomentose, black expansions, .2- .3
mm. high, basal filaments nearly prostrate, .014- .016 mm. in diameter,
sheath about .002 mm. thick, geminate branches numerous, erect, soon
dividing into repeatedly tolypothricoidal, tortuous, corymbose branch-
lets, upper filaments .012-.014 mm. in diameter, trichomes gradually
diminishing to .005-.006 mm. in diameter, with sheaths increasing to
.005 mm. in thickness, lamellate with diverging lamellae, apex obtuse.
Cells narrowly discoidal below, becoming cuboidal and often torulose
above; heterocysts .011-,012 by .006-.007 mm., breadth greater than
the length.
Common, forming dark velvety patches on the bark of Juniperus
Bermudiana. In habit resembling S. Cortex Wood, but a true Peta-
lonema, most nearly related to S. crustaceum Ag., but easily dis-
tinguished from that species by the size of the cells.
