Growing next to a clearing in a brushy 21 year old old-field with Malus, Artemisia vulgaris, Pyrus calleryana, Aster, Solidago rugosa, and Betula populifolia. Very common.

Tree to 6 m. With peeling, flakey reddish bark. Cones open, honey brown. Phenology of specimen: Flower.
