573» Scytonema hawaiiana n. sp.

Marine. Forming a dark blue-green or blackish, low, turf-like stratum
(like Vaucheria) ; filaments sparingly branched, tortuous, intricate, 2-5
mm. high, 25-32 mic. in diameter; sheath lamellose, thick, yellowish; tri-
chomesi 12-17 mic. in diameter, aeruginous; pseudocysts quadrate, or 2-4
times shorter than broad; heterocysts greenish-yellow, oval or cylindrical,
12-17 mic. wide, 12-35 m^c long.

On perpendicular sides of rocks just below high tide, dry at low tide.
