Widespread in the northern part of South America; in the Guianas common but usually not abundant in the understory of rain forests on well-drained places at lower elevations, up to about 600 m.     Bactris humilis is characterized by its acaulescence, leaves with clustered pinnae, inflorescences with early decaying, densely brownish-black setose bracts and numerous slender rachillas in the basal part covered with flowertriads of one pistillate and two staminate flowers, the fruits orange-red at maturity turning dark green when overripe and beset with black setae. The species is essentially a species of the hot lowlands only occasionally reaching middle elevations.
