    Description - Leaves dimorphic, some reduced to ovate acuminate pungent entire sheaths, others large with broad, flat, serrulate, persistent blade-bases; blades deciduous along a straight transverse line, linear, attenuate, pungent, 4 dm long, 8-12 mm wide, entire, furfuraceous on both sides. Scape erect, slender, more or less furfuraceous; scape-bracts erect, narrowly lanceolate, attenuate, the upper ones from longer to shorter than the internodes, entire, soon glabrous. Inflorescence laxly racemose, to 12 cm long, few-flowered. Floral bracts about equaling or shorter than the pedicels, glabrous, the lower lanceolate, the upper ovate; flowers suberect; pedicels slender, 15-20 mm long. Sepals lanceolate, acute and mucronulate, slightly asymmetric, 16-20 mm long, slightly furfuraceous or glabrous, alate-carinate; petals to 43 mm long, red, bearing a nearly entire scale; stamens included; ovary a little more than 1/2 superior. Seeds narrowly winged, ecaudate.
