Genus Description - Herbaceous perennials. Leaves with equitant leaf sheaths attached in sigmoid arrangement. Inflorescences sphaeroidal, of compressed or elongate heads, subtended by 2 involucral bracts. Flowers short-pedicellate or sessile; petals ephemeral; anthers 4-locular, dehiscing by single apical pore, the connective prolonged as conspicuous apical cochleariform appendage; ovary 3-locular, each locule bearing a single basally attached ovule, normally 1 or 2 of 3 ovules aborting. Fruit a capsule, firmly indurate above middle, loculicidally dehiscent. Seed oblong, longitudinally striate.
