    Genus Description - Terrestrial herbs. Inflorescences terminal or leaf-opposed, enclosed in large, spathaceous bracts. Flowers: sepals free or lower (ventral) 2 connate; petals free, the dorsal, larger petals clawed, the ventral one reduced; stamens 6 (3 fertile + 3 sterile), the filaments glabrous; ovary usually 2-locular. Capsule loculicidally dehiscent or indehiscent, with 1 or 2 seeds per locule.
