Species Description - Differing from Bryum plicatum as follows: Plants more robust; stems simple or branched by short, slender subfloral innovations; leaves ovate; cells linear-rhomboidal, thicker-walled, rather abruptly wider and thinner-walled below, especially at the basal margins. Dioicous. Setae slender, up to 2.3 cm long; capsules nodding, oblong-pyriform, shortnecked; operculum large, hemispheric, apiculate; peristome normal; endostome consisting of a relatively high basal membrane, widely perforate segments, and well-developed, longappendiculate cilia. Spores ca. 10 µm, nearly smooth.

This most robust member of the subgenus in Latin America is similar to B. filiforme, but the leaves are longer (more than 1.1 mm long) and broader at the apex. Also the basal cells are wider and thinner-walled, and the setae and capsules longer.

Distribution
On moist soil of slopes, banks of ditches, etc., in sunny to semi-shaded places; Chiapas, Durango, Hidalgo, Mexico, Oaxaca.—Mexico; Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Bolivia, northern Chile, and Argentina.
