    Species Description - Shrub or subshrub 0.5-2(-3) m tall, many-branched from base; stems 4-angled, usually with numerous recurved prickles at the angles, pubescence of simple and glandular hairs. Leaves opposite; blades 2-7 x 0.4-2 cm, ovate to oblong-lanceolate, chartaceous, scaberulous above, densely pubescent beneath (the hairs slender and straight), the apex acute to obtuse, the base unequal, rounded, truncate, or cuneate, the margins serrate; petioles 4-15 mm long, pubescent. Rowers in axillary heads subtended by involucral bracts; heads 9-12 x 15-18 mm; peduncles 2-5.5 cm long. Calyx greenish, 1.5 mm long; corolla turning from yellow to orange, the tube puberulent without, 8-10 mm long, slightly curved, the limb ca. 4 mm wide; stamens and style included. Drupe nearly globose, 4.5-5 mm long, blackish.

    An occasional shrub of dry and disturbed habitats. Lameshur (A2741), Rosenberg (B255). Also on St. Thomas and Tortola; throughout the West Indies and from Mexico south to Argentina.
