Genus Description - Monoecious or dioecious shrubs or herbs, more or less covered with canescent hairs. Leaves alternate or opposite, petiolate to sessile. Flowers solitary or in glomerules, staminate and pistillate usually in separate glomerules; bracteoles 2, accrescent only in pistillate flowers, persistent on fruits; calyx with 3-5 sepals; stamens 3-5, with free or connate filaments. Utricle indehiscent; seeds lenticular.

A genus of about 100, salt-tolerant species with cosmopolitan distribution.
