Branchlets irregularly striate, tomentose; axillary buds solitary or in files, 2 or 3 per node, tomentose or velutinous; stipules linear-falcate, caducous or at least deciduous, 1-3 mm long. Leaves distichous; petiole canaliculate, sometimes more or less marginate, 10—16 cm long (or longer on sterile branchlets), terminated by a bristle 0.5-1.5 mm long, tomentose; petiolar gland usually 1, inserted below lowest pair of leaflets, urceolate, sub- sessile sometimes few to several much smaller glands occurring on rachis; pulvinus cylindrical to narrowly ovoid, rugose, tomentose, 2.5-3.75 mm long. Leaflets (15-)20-35 pairs, 1-2 cm long, oblong, obliquely cuneate at base, and tapering to petiolule ca. 1 mm long, apex obtuse or rounded (in most Rio Negro collections) to shallowly emarginate (Venezuelan Guayana), glabrous above or sometimes puberulent on midrib and secondary venation mostly tomentose beneath. Racemes 1-2 (-3) per node, the peduncle velutinous; peduncular glands urceolate, 0.75-1.0 mm across, subsessile; bracts mostly caducous; pedicels 2.0-3.5 cm long, velutinous, bracteoles triangular, 1-2 (-3) mm distant from each other, 4-6 mm below hypanthium, velutinous. Calyx (including hypanthium) 7-9 (-11) mm in diameter; sepals 2.5-4.0 (-4.5) mm long, velutinous; petals 12-23 mm long, puberulent to velutinous at base without and along venation; filaments 0.25-0.5 mm long; anthers 4—5 mm long, velutinous; pistil 12—20 mm long, tomentose.
