Species Description - Shrub or small tree up to 6 m high; hairs light reddish-brown, ca. 0.5-1 mm long, more or less straight, or curled; young twigs densely tomentose, the young bark flaking off in strips with the hairs still attached. Leaves elliptic, oblanceolate, or ovate, 4-8.5 cm long, 1.5-3.6 cm wide, (1.5-)2-3.4 times as long as wide, densely villous to tomentose beneath, sparsely to densely villous to pubescent on the blade above, the midvein usually densely tomentose above; apex acute to acuminate; base acute, cuneate, or obtuse; petiole scarcely channeled, 4-8 mm long, 1-2 mm thick, densely tomentose; midvein impressed slightly to nearly flat, usually hidden by hairs above, prominent below; lateral veins ca. 5-9 pairs, leaving the midvein at an angle of ca. 45°, the venation brochidodromous; blades stiffly coriaceous to subcoriaceous, drying dark reddish-brown to nearly black, often lustrous above. Peduncles 6-8 mm long, 1.5-2 mm thick, densely tomentose, solitary, uniflorous; bracteoles linear, 3-5 mm long, 0.5-0.7 mm wide, densely tomentose; Calyx-lobes before anthesis ca. 2-3 mm long, at anthesis the hypanthium tearing between the lobes, the lobes then ca. 4-5 mm long, 6-7 mm wide, 0.5-0.8 times as long as wide, densely pubescent within and without; petals suborbicular, ca. 10 mm long, densely tomentose without, densely tomentose basally to glabrous within; hypanthium infundibular to obconic, 6-8 mm long, densely tomentose, prolonged ca. 2 mm beyond the summit of the ovary; disk after anthesis ca. 10-12 mm across, densely pubescent; stamens ca. 300-500; anthers 0.7-1 mm long; style glabrous except basally, ca. 8 mm long; ovary 9-17-locular; ovules 7-12 per locule. Fruit subglobose, ca. 2-3 cm in diam. Seeds, including locule-wall, ca. 4 mm long, 5-9 in fruits seen, the locule-wall glandular-verrucose.

  • Discussion

Campomanesia rufa is distinguished by: a densely pubescent peduncle 6-8 mm long that is shorter than the flower bud; a flower with 300-500 stamens; a disk 10-12 mm across after anthesis. It seems to be closely related to C. schlechtendaliana and C. sessiliflora and is compared with them in lead 7 of Key B. In C. rufa one finds specimens with relatively straight hairs (e.g., the type of regeliana) and others with curled, tangled hairs (e.g., the type of A. rufa). In appearance these two groups are different but I have not found other characters to correlate with the type of indumentum.

  • Distribution

Campomanesia rufa, a poorly known species, apparently restricted to Minas Gerais, is probably a shrub or small tree of cerrado vegetation.
