    Species Description - Shrub or small tree up to 3.0 m tall; stem or trunk often with branched thorns up to 4.0 cm long. Branchlets slender, patently puberulous at tips, older parts early brownish-grayish-corticate and laxly lenticellate, not rarely with slender axillary spines up to 3.0 cm long. Leaves apparently persistent, oblong-lanceolate to oblong-elliptic, apex subcaudate-acuminate, tip often bluntish with a small terminal gland, base cuneate to the petiole, no basal glands, chartaceous to subcoriaceous, or even coriaceous, glabrous, shining above, glandular-subcrenulate-serrate (ca 1.0 mm) along the entire margin, (3.5-)4.0-7.0(-9.0, -13.0) cm long, 2.5-4.0(-5.0) cm broad, lateral nerves 7-8(-9) pairs, slightly to distinctly prominent on both faces as is the more or less dense reticulation of veins and veinlets; petiole puberulous, glabrescent, 2.0-4.0(-6.0) mm long. Flowers 4-7 per fascicle or much abbreviated raceme from foliate or often defoliate axils; bracts ovate, pubescent, 1.0 mm long; pedicels slender, articulate 1.0-1.5 mm above base, short-pubescent all their length, 3.0-7.0 mm in the [male], 2.0-3.0 mm in the [female]. Sepals 4 or 5, ovate-orbicular, obtuse, densely hispidulous on both faces, ciliate, 1.5(-2.0) mm long. Disk formed by ca 10 minute glands. [male]: stamens 12-15(-20); filaments glabrous, ca 3.0 mm long. [female]: ovary ovoid-oblongoid, glabrous; style ca 0.5 mm long; stigmas 2 or 3, reniform, 2-lobed. Berry globular, reddish to blackish, 5.0-7.0 mm diam; seeds 35, ovoid-compressed, shining, ca 3.0 mm long.

    Distribution and Ecology - Brazil (Paraiba to Santa Catarina); in wet forest, gallery forest, Araucarietum, also in secondary growth, from lowland to ca 1000 m alt.
